Hundreds witness the lashing of 14 people in a soccer stadium in Pul Alam, a city in the eastern province of Afghanistan. There were three women among the victims who were lashed publicly by the Taliban. Taliban invited the locals to witness the punishment on social media.
The Taliban Supreme Court said, “Fourteen people, including three women, were lashed in the presence of scholars, authorities and people … for different sins including adultery, robbery and other forms of corruption in a football stadium in Logar [province].” While speaking in this regard a Taliban spokesperson, Omar Mansoor Mujahid, said that the three women were released after receiving their lashings, however some of the men were jailed.
Previously, in August this year a similar incident was witnessed when reportedly five people; including two women were whipped. The incident was confirmed by the Taliban officials in the Zabul province.
It was reported that a man and woman that were reportedly living together and were engaged in sexual relationship were flogged 39 times for committing adultery. Both of them were sentenced to two and six years in prison, respectively. Another woman who lived in the same building as the couple was sentenced to six years of imprisonment for allegedly allowing the adulterous relation to occur. Two other men received 20 lashes and a year in prison each after being arrested on charges of robbery.
The Taliban took over Afghanistan’s reign in August 2021, seizing the power. After rising to power, the Taliban enforced strict Shariah laws, followed by mass violation of human rights causing a large number of Afghans to be displaced from their homes. Taliban takeover resulted in massive migration resulting in a refugee crisis.
