Deadly Floods Thwack Northern India, Killing 22 At Least

In the face of heavy rain predicted, the residents in the states of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand have been warned not to go outside whilst Delhi schools have been closed amid flooding. India’s meteorological department has forecast more rain in the coming days across large parts of northern India.

New Delhi reportedly, witnessed the wettest July day in 40 years as heavy rainfall inundated the New Delhi roads and streets. The rains triggered flash floods and landslides killing at least 22. New Delhi received a 153 mm of rain on Sunday, July 9, which is the highest recorded precipitation in a single July day in 40 years. Official data shows monsoon rains in the first week of July, across India have already produced about two percent more rainfall than normal.

Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal called for a meeting with all ministers, officers and mayor over the situation in New Delhi in order to assess the situation due to incessant rainfall. Delhi Fire Service has confirmed a total of 13 incidents of house collapse in New Delhi alone.

Meantime, the IMD has issued a red alert for several districts of Himachal Pradesh and an orange alert for three other districts for the next 48 hours as the state continued to receive heavy rainfall. IMD has also issued alerts for flash floods and landslides in the state. On the other hand, the Uttarakhand authorities have also sounded a red alert in the state whilst the government machinery prepares to brace the impact of imminent crisis. The water levels in all major rivers of Uttarakhand, including River Ganga, have risen over the past few days.

“We have given a warning for extremely heavy rainfall and issued red alerts in Himachal Pradesh…tomorrow onwards rain is likely to decrease in Himachal Pradesh but in Uttarakhand, for the next 3 days, similar kind or a little lower intensity rain is likely to continue…today, heavy rain expected in eastern Punjab, Haryana, West Uttar Pradesh, and south Rajasthan…,” IMD Delhi scientist said.
